Soldiers Field
From Military Grounds to Living Landscape
Soldiers Field has a long and meaningful history within the Mount Gretna community.
Beginning in the late 1800s, the area served as a training ground for National Guard units, where thousands of citizen-soldiers prepared for service. Over time, it became an active center for military encampments, drills, and community activity.
As the role of the land evolved, Soldiers Field transitioned from a place of military training to one of preservation and stewardship. Today, it is being thoughtfully restored as a natural landscape—guided by ecological principles and a commitment to long-term sustainability.
This work reflects not just a restoration of land, but a continuation of its legacy as a place shaped by and for the community.
Restoration in Progress
Today, Soldiers Field is an active restoration project focused on improving natural habitats, planting trees, and supporting long-term ecological health.
This work is guided by ecological principles and carried out over time through careful stewardship and community involvement.
